Additive Manufacturing has multiple commonly used names like 3D-printing and Rapid Prototyping.

The best term for the manufacturing methods is Additive Manufacturing, as all or even most of the manufacturing methods are not similar to printing processes.

The general principle for AM is that material is added layer by layer. Commonly the manufacturing process advances trough different steps like in the picture below. First a 3D-model is created, which is sliced to layers and then the 3D-printer manufactures the parts from said layers. The main steps of 3D-printing are visible on the next picture.
